OUTL 301 - Outdoor Ministries (SERV-2)

3 hours

This course sharpens students’ skills in connecting people with God through nature. Whether the student is preparing to teach forest kindergarten, planning a week of outdoor education for their 5th graders, taking a group of high school students on Senior Survival, or planning a retreat for the elders of their local church, this class will provide hands-on skills for using the out of doors to grow people’s understanding and connection with God. Three areas of focus are emphasized: l) Ministry skills, such as leading spiritual nature activities, oral presentations, group facilitation, active listening, etc. 2) Spiritual development, such as personal spiritual growth, interpreting and designing object lessons, utilizing the wilderness to strengthen our relationship with God and as a place of spiritual transformation, and 3) Understanding of the natural world, such as plant and animal identification, understanding theories of origin, increased observational skills, etc. Students will gain practical outdoor ministry experience through networking with area schools, churches, and community programs.
